Nike Air Rift Breathe White main

That’s right; the unconventional sneaker/sandal hybrid that is the Nike Air Rift is back for summer. The unusual silhouette took the streets by storm in the early noughties. Were you an early adopter of the shoe back in its 2002 hey day?

The slightly odd looking shoe became an early street style star, with New Yorkers being the first to give the silhouette the seal of approval. It soon hit the UK and everyone worth their fashion salt was sporting a pair.

It was first released in 1996 when Nike turned its hand to running footwear promoting natural foot motion. Their inspiration for the progressive style was the Kenyan Rift Valley and the efficient style of Kenyan barefoot runners. The Valley’s famous Great Rift fault line inspired the sole shape and unique split toe.

Re-launched for summer 2016 as part of the Breathe pack, the Rift is available in a range of colours including neon orange, black, white and blue. It features a breathable stretch mesh upper for ventilation and an ergonomic design for enhanced flexibility.

Will you be wearing the Rift this summer? To some it looks slightly odd with its split toe and Velcro fastenings, but to others it’s a thing of beauty. Check out the new colours below and shop the range here.
