Whilst skating may not be his forte, there’s no mistaking that Steve Van Doren has made huge contributions to shaping the skate scene and its culture. On May 14th 2015, The International Skateboarding Hall of Fame (ISHOF) honoured the legend by awarding Steve with the prestigious Icon Award. Who is Steve Van Doren I hear you ask? Read on for a quick intro of the Vans legend.

The son of Vans co-founder, Paul Van Doren, Steve has been there from the beginning of Vans. From being roped into help paint the walls of their first store opening (which had the factory, the office, and the retail store itself on the same premises) way back in March 1966 with his 4 siblings, to greeting customers and letting them know about custom shoes (you could pop in with pretty much any fabric and they’d make it into shoes for you), and from embracing the skate culture by sponsoring up-and-coming riders who loved the durable rubber shoes; Steve’s passion for the brand has been a huge contribution to its success.

Nowadays, Steve is the vice president of events and promotions, along with the unofficial ambassador of fun. He spends nearly 40 weeks a year on the road, including a full summer of travelling with the 48-city American music festival, the Vans Warped Tour. Through everything he does, he keeps his father’s philosophy close to heart:

“It was never about waving around the brand like a flag. It was always about the people.”

–          Paul Van Doren
