July 2015 saw the launch of the hotly-anticipated Converse Chuck II, the biggest update to the Chuck silhouette since its initial release back in 1917. With the success of the improved classic, the brand seems to be on a mission to update their iconic plimsolls with new and improved technology for next level comfort and style; ladies and gentleman, meet the brand spanking new Converse Jack Purcell.

Well-known amongst sneakerheads and sports-lovers, the Jack Purcell trainer was actually designed by the man himself in 1935, after he was crowned world badminton champion in 1933. He designed the sneaker in a bid to provide more protection and support on the court, using a canvas and rubber mix, similar to the original Converse Chuck Taylor All Star. Funnily enough, Converse loved the styling of the ‘Smilies’ so much, they purchased the trademark rights to the shoes in the ‘70s; and the rest, they say, is history.

This year, the vintage plimsolls follow suit with the updated Chucks, by being treated to a whole bunch of techy design updates:

  • The fabric designs are updated with a stronger, more resilient two-ply duck canvas upper, inspired by army specifications for added durability.
  • You’ll find an Ortholite footbed in there that’s been injected with Nike Zoom Air Technology for added comfort and support.
  • The signature two-piece Jack Purcell smile toe construction (which is where the nickname ‘Smilies’ comes from – ‘cause it looks kinda like a smiley face, see it?) is updated in Converse blue.
  • There’s a reinforced no-slip canvas heel counter to elevate overall durability.
  • Friction during prolonged wear is reduced thanks to a handy winged tongue and duck canvas eyerow.
